Is it Legal to do SEO?

Some people seem to think that SEO somehow illegal, immoral, or against Google’s rules. Those people’s websites don’t usually perform awfully well. Not in the least. But, hey, at least they’re something right – they’re thinking about SEO. They are completely wrong, of course. In the general sense, that is, which is normal SEO. Google doesn’t like black hats, but they have nothing against white hat optimization. In fact, Google encourages people to perform it. It makes their work that much easier. The more optimized a site is, the more easily the bots can crawl it and see what it’s all about. They can check out the content and recommend it to people without too much effort, and at the end of the day this is what Google wants to do. If it helps your business, great. If it doesn’t, Google doesn’t care. But as long as you’re not using some black hat tactics, you’re alright in Google’s book.

Now, what people usually think about when talking about immoral, or illegal (not in the strict sense – you can’t go to jail for black hat search engine optimization, but you will definitely get a penalty from Google) is black hat. Back in the day when things were a lot simpler, black hats used shady tactics in order to fool search engines. That made search engines smarter and black hats can’t do that anymore. Because they’re trying to manipulate the results, search engines don’t like them. After all, they’re preventing them from doing their job properly, and that cannot be allowed. However, white hat is still, fine though.
