The thing about SEO is that it’s constantly evolving. It’s not like a Pokémon that only has three forms, reached through two evolutions – it’s in the constant process of change. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but does create some annoying challenges for SEO companies, especially when they do some of the mistakes shown below. These are not exactly technical mistakes, which should in theory make them easier to correct, but this is not what we’re observing.
Expectations
All clients have high expectations. There is not one that will go, “OK, I get that the process is long and tedious and that it will take a lot of work to get where I want so I’ll just let you guys to it.” No, they’ll constantly ask you when they’ll reach the number one spot and why it hasn’t happened yet. It’s not their fault – most people don’t understand how SEO works (which is why we’re here). Your job is to explain that to them. Tell them that it will take time, explain the work load and when they can expect results. Also tell them that there are no guarantees. Create realistic expectations and the clients won’t be a problem.
Trying to undercharge for services
The market is tough, that’s sure enough, and having low prices gives you an edge. However, if your prices are too low and that affects the quality of your work, then you should just raise them. Otherwise you end up not doing a good enough job and your clients simply pour finances into something that is ultimately not doing them any favors. Fair is fair, and as SEO is getting more and more expensive, you should be competitive. Shoot for optimum, not minimum.
