Onsite SEO: Keyword Usage Tips
Keywords are not as important for SEO as they used to (back in the day, keywords were SEO). However, this doesn’t mean that they are no longer important. On the contrary, they are still one of the main ways we can use in order to communicate with search engines, both as searchers and as optimizers. As searchers, we still use keywords to make queries, though semantic search is getting more and more advanced. Whereas as SEOs we communicate what the content on our page is. Here’s some useful tips on how to be more effective at it.
1. Title Tag
Always use your main keywords in the title tag. It is still a very strong ranking factor and should definitely not be underestimated. The importance of this cannot be overstated. It’s one of the main components of your page that tells search engines what it is about. Keywords get bolded when they appear in the title tag, so you should keep this in mind, too. So it’s not just for search engines, but for searchers, too. Keep in mind that you should keep your title tag at around 60 characters (including spaces), otherwise it gets cut off.
2. H1 Tag
The rules here are pretty much the same as the title tag. The H1 tag appears on the page and is also an important ranking factor, so do not miss the opportunity to use your keywords here, as well. Again, keep it short.
3. Body
When writing a text with SEO in mind, in the body of the text try to use a keyword as early as possible (without sacrificing the quality of the text!). Generally, the earlier, the better, and it’s good to use them toward the beginning of the paragraph. Long-tail keywords are generally better. You can also use synonyms.
