Usually when they hire an SEO company, people want to rank well. This is reasonable because when potential customers look for products or services online, they usually don’t bother with something that’s not on the top or at least the first few places (since often we don’t really find what we’re looking for in the number spot or we like to visit additional sources). By this train of thought, it makes perfect sense to want to rank number one in Google. However, sadly it is not that simple.
In order to get to the top of the ranking, you often have to choose keywords that don’t have much of a competition. Otherwise it’s nearly impossible, or it takes a lot of time in order to rank well. This is not to say that you shouldn’t strive for more competitive keywords, but if you truly want to rank better, those with smaller competition are the way to go. The problem is that those keywords have a small competition for a reason – they’re rarely being searched. This means that, theoretically, you could be in number one rank on Google and still have a small traffic for that search term.
Traffic does not always directly correlate with your rank. Sometimes you might get more traffic from keywords you don’t rank that well with (fifth place, or even the bottom of the page), than from keywords ranking at number one. It’s all about the percentages. If a million people per month look for something and only 5% of them get to your rank (which, let’s say – five), then you will still get 50,000 visits on your site. On the other hand, if you rank first for a term that has 20,000 searches per month, even if 100% of them visit your site, you will still only get 20,000 visits per month. Traffic is an important factor, so don’t ignore it.
