Many companies in the sector make the mistake of thinking they are going to be the next best thing since sliced bread, so they start making unreasonable and impossible claims to their clients and then they fail to deliver. That’s really their problem because they’re the ones getting replaced with another company. However, since many self-proclaimed experts are actually doing this, it’s getting hard for us, legitimate business to set proper expectations. The thing is that when someone has told a client that they will get number one rank with a certain keyword in, say, three weeks, that client doesn’t want to hear that this is impossible and that’s not how SEO works. They demand results and they demand them now.
The truth is a bit direr, we’re afraid, because first of all, keywords are far less important than they used to be. Nowadays they used by Google to figure out what the heck your page is about, but they are not used in search results all that much. If you’re competing for a certain keyword and you’re optimizing for it, but your competition does a better job with their content, Google won’t care that your pages are better optimized for that keyword. To put this into perspective, say you’re optimizing for the keyword “SEO”, but your competitor’s pages are doing better with “digital marketing”. Google no longer cares about the keywords. It draws the conclusion that you’re both in the same niche or category, but your competitor’s content is doing better, so they will beat you even for “SEO”.
Google has gotten much more sophisticated than most people realize. This is why SEO is still viable, but much more difficult to do, so creating unrealistic expectations actually hurts the industry. You need to know that SEO takes a lot more time and effort than it used to. But that’s why the pay-offs are greater, as well. After all, organic search remains the number one traffic source.
