SEO: Google is a Lot Smarter than You Think

We love it how there are so many articles online about the inherent redundancy and ineffectiveness, let alone efficiency of black-hat tactics such as keyword stuffing, and yet there are so many SEO “experts” who keep practicing it. This never seizes to amaze us. It’s like these people (and even entire companies sometimes) think that somehow Google will never catch them. What’s worse is that they manage to convince their unsuspecting clients that they will get to the top using these shady techniques. It doesn’t happen, people, or at least no anymore. There used to be a time when that might have worked, that time is long gone. Today, Google is too smart for that. SEO needs to be done for people, not crawlers, or else you’re simply wasting your time.

Allow us to illustrate this with an example. There was a point in time where hundreds of pages full of incoherent babbling and random words and phrases, repeating over and over again, inhabited the Internet. This was due to the brilliant idea that Google uses those words and phrases to analyze the content. Hence, the more keywords there were, the better the ranking would be. This was the prevailing paradigm, and to some extent it did work for some people. Google was much more primitive back then, so these cheap tricks were not being detected. However, Google, and thus SEO, have evolved. The algorithms are now advanced enough to make a clear distinction between what used to be copied and pasted phrase, and actual coherent text which people enjoy. Social sharing, for example, has become one of the important factors for ranking content. The bottom line is that if someone tells you that these cheap tricks will work, you should inform them that Google is much smarter than they think.
