With more than 40% of people using the Internet currently doing it via a mobile device (most likely a smartphone), it’s no surprise that Google introduced Hummingbird to deal with more holistic and sentence-shaped searches. This tendency is still going strong and doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. In fact, voice searches are now becoming the standard among young people, with adults closely following. Thus, the idea behind keywords is changing. This is not to say that keywords won’t be important anymore – they will be. But the thing is that no one searching using the voice interface will use keywords for their search. Whole sentences and long-tail keywords have become the norm and this is no surprise – you tell your phone what to look for and even though it may be easier to type a few keywords when you’re behind your PC, saying the entire thing you want seems much more natural.

 

Thus you need to pay attention to long-tail keywords and that your content is optimized for mobile. SEO doesn’t have to be about a few keywords – simply produce high quality content and you will be rewarded with good results (as long as people actually consider your content any good and you have a solid social media presence because that is important, too). All of this is to say that you should not fear progress. Simply because voice searches are getting more and more popular doesn’t mean that everything will automatically change. All you need to do, really, is to make sure that when people search for phrases instead of keywords, you are prepared. Because no matter how well you rank with certain words, if no one searches for them, no one will find them.
