The end of the year is always a time when we start to reflect on what has been and try to derive lessons from every experience. Of course, SEO is no different which is why we’ve decided to have a look at some of the morals we’ve extracted from 2014.

 

Quality over quantity is still the main mantra. Google has made this more than clear and while we appreciate the message, it’s still getting a bit annoying that we have to work in the dark, more or less. Back when quantity could dictate the terms, making calculations and promises was easy. You could guarantee certain results in a certain time based on the quantity of the material you could produce. Now you can’t do that anymore. Guarantees do not exists and since quality is running the game, it’s difficult to judge whether what you’re doing is yielding fruit or not.

 

This is where the social component comes in. Getting people to share your content on social networks is getting more and more important. In Google’s eyes, this means that you’re producing good content and people are having a good time on your site, which is a reason enough for them to rank it higher.

 

Guest posting is basically dead for SEO purposes, and with the advent of social sharing one would think that links for authority are no longer that important. Guess again! Getting links from authority sites is still one of the best ways to get noticed by Google and to improve your rank. Some things never change.
